As part of Refugee Week 2025, the Justice & Peace Group were honoured to host an insightful talk by Tim Whittaker, Chair of WTRRP, alongside co-trustee Seema Agnihotri. We’re very grateful to High Street Baptist Church, Tring for providing the hall for this important event.
WTRRP stands for Watford & Three Rivers Refugee Partnership and is a registered charity offering vital support through its volunteer team and a full-time caseworker. We learnt from Tim and Seema about the work of their charity.
What is an Asylum Seeker?
An asylum seeker is someone who has fled their country and formally applied for asylum in another – such as the UK. Once asylum is granted, they become a refugee.
Life as an Asylum Seeker is very diificult
– Not permitted to work
– Receive just £49.18 per person per week
– Many face poverty, poor health and rely on food banks
– Families with children receive support from Social Services
The UK remains one of the toughest countries in which to claim asylum.
The WTRRP offers help with immigration advice, language training and a social hub where those who feel isolated can connect and relax in a supportive environment.
